I - Announcements/Agenda/Administrative
Discussed reactions/perceptions to last week's Arbitron workshop w/Jim Bennett. All who attended agreed it was positive, informative and helpful. Found and filled out a thank you card to Jim Bennett for his donated time.
Got a brief report back on LSB meeting in San Jose on 4/22. LSB delegates reported that pending program council items on the agenda were carried over to the May meeting.
II - On-Going programming
Did brief report back on correspondence with Rebecca Riley - who submitted the approved proposal "Money as Tool" for a 3-hour limited run series. Correspondence has been forwarded to the PA Director. She reported having taken some additional training in digital audio techniques at BAVC and finding a new collaborator on the program to work with.
Education Today initial contract to end at the end of May. Program Council members: Mary, Nick and Joe agreed to listen to several episodes of the show and lead our discussion. All PC members strongly encouraged to listen to at least one episode
III - Special Programming
Passed on a one-time proposal form for processing for the CSU-Monterey Film Studies half hour show "Behind The Screens". Show was originally planned as an on-going proposal, but as it turned out not to be possible for them to do, has been changed to a one-time proposal for the 30 minute pilot. Program council listened to the pilot last fall and liked it.
Approved API Heritage Month for broadcast on Sunday May 28th from 6:30pm to 10:00pm. Music Director to contact Discreet Music to determine if time slot can be extended to 6:30 to 10:30pm.
Discussed April 23rd immigrant rights march. PA Department reported that audio was taken from the march and is planned for re-packaging and broadcast in the future. Live coverage didn't happen due to technical problems with getting a line in to the Federal Building Plaza where the march ended up.
PA Department reported on MayDay plans. KPFA to cover immigrant rights protests nationwide with integration between shows. FSRN reporters will be at many nationwide rallies/marches and activities and report through the day - including the planned Cal walk-out.
PA Department announced the planned broadcast of the Bipartisan Congressional Forum to Bring The Troops Home for Thursday April 27th 1-3pm.
Announced upcoming proposals for: Carnaval (no proposal received yet), Pilipino Independence Day (June 12th) (proposal received), Tupac's birthday (June 16) (no proposal received yet).
IV - Evaluations
Radio Chronicles was approved for a year-long contract.
Music Department reported completing a six month check-in with "The Big Thang" regarding issues identified in the original evaluation. The Music Director assessed significant improvement in all areas where improvements were needed and recommended full renewal status. Recommendation approved by program council.
Youth Radio completion of the self-evaluation form (requested by the PC to assist with the evaluation of the program) reported to be in progress.
V - Long-Term Issues
Carried over discussion of listenership portion of grid ecology exercise until more (all) program council members get a chance to get their thoughts on paper. Paper requested not for storage purposes but a) to help us be concise and focused and b) as a way to look back on our thoughts at later points in the process, so we can remember what we said.
Discussed carts and self-promotion issues including the increased demand for PSA's and the difficulties of ever getting to the evergreen carts.
Discussed listener comments and the administrative hassle of getting the comments pulled and transferred to an mp3 file. Concluded the simplest way is probably for PC members to just call in to the mailbox and listen to the accumulated comments over the phone. Waiting for the password info to implement.
